Lock Quay Bridge

The Limerick City Canal is located just off Clare Street, near the Abbey Bridge and connects Limerick City to Killaloe. Built in the mid 18th Century, it wasn't until 1799 that boats travelled along this route, which connected the River Shannon to the Abbey River. It was an invaluable transport system for heavy goods, particularly the transport of Guinness from the former Guinness storehouse near Lock Quay, to Dublin, a journey which took four days of travel. The canal was closed to commercial traffic in 1960. The canal features beautiful walks from the city to the University of Limerick.
